Linux
I would devote this section to linux enthusiasts (include me). Linux is a powerful OS. It is not Unix or one of members in its family, even though Linus Torvalds has his inspiration from the design of Unix OS, because he wrote Linux OS from scratch. Linux is powerful, yet it is still young. Consequently, users need to learn some basic concepts to set up the system. Let imagine, the old days of DOS, people had to know how to write a batch file to load some desired programs at start up, similarly to the past of Windows-Windows 3.1, you have to know Win.ini to maintain and run the system smoothly.
Here are some good links to start and learn this effective,high-stability OS. Some links will bring to good websites to download some development tools or utilities. Thank all Linux developers, who currently work on this powerful OS, so Linux is getting more mature.

For people, who have not had Linux yet, go to CNET and follow the link to get Linux distributions. One of the most user-friendly Linux distribution is Corel Linux (base on Debian distribution). I means, this distribution is very easy to install and configure, good for beginner. However, power users might want to download distributions which follow Red Hat Linux, because of the powerful package management- RPM, and users can find a lot of Linux utilities, distributed in RPM format.
Here is a good Word Processing - AbiSource -- Linux - Intel Install, for Linux and it does not require much harddisk space.
Pick some good HD low-level utilities to solve problems about harddisks.
